Both roots, šbt and nwḥ, move away from the all-too-common conception of rest as relaxation. It is the third verb, npš, that comes closest to that idea, but this verb is only used three times (Ex. 23:12; 31:17; 2 Sam. 16:14). Exodus 31:17 is the only occurrence in which God is the subject, and it does refer to the seventh day.
